Senate Minority Leader and Senator representing Benue South, Comrade Abba Moro, has criticised what he described as the government’s reactive response to insecurity, urging authorities to shift from condemning attacks after they occur to preventing them.
Speaking with journalists, Moro said government officials should not have to wait for reports from affected communities before responding to security threats, insisting that they have a duty to stay informed about developments within their jurisdictions.
“Government owes a responsibility to the people it governs.
The current situation is completely unacceptable,” he said.
The lawmaker noted that in well-functioning democracies, governors are often among the first responders whenever disasters or security breaches occur, rather than remaining in their offices while attacks unfold.
He lamented that government responses have largely been limited to issuing statements of condemnation and announcing security deployments after lives have already been lost.
“Our governors stay in the comfort of their government houses to condemn attacks.
“They do not make statements to prevent them. After the excitement generated by the attacks dies down, everything goes quiet until another attack occurs,” Moro said.
The senator questioned how long governments would continue reacting to tragedies instead of taking proactive measures to stop them.
“For how long shall we continue condemning what has happened instead of preparing to prevent what will happen?” he asked.
Moro called for a more proactive security strategy, urging federal and state authorities to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve rapid response mechanisms, and take concrete steps to protect vulnerable communities from recurring attacks.
