The Federal Government has intensified efforts to strengthen accountability, improve efficiency and enforce measurable performance across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), reinforcing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s zero-tolerance stance on poor performance in public institutions.
The renewed drive took centre stage at the MDA High-Level Strategic Engagement and Press Briefing hosted by the Federal Ministry of Finance under the leadership of the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele.
The engagement, themed “MDA Data Collection & Harmonisation,” brought together key government stakeholders to examine institutional performance, improve data coordination and strengthen accountability across government agencies.
The Director-General of the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC), Princess Zahrah Mustapha Audu, presented findings from the Business Environment Enhancement Programme Accelerator (BEEPA),
highlighting progress in reform implementation, persistent performance gaps and the need for sustained monitoring of public institutions.
According to the assessment, 16 MDAs achieved full implementation of the reforms assessed, indicating progress in the Federal Government’s efforts to improve the business environment.
However, recent mystery shopping findings revealed a decline in responsiveness following the conclusion of active monitoring, raising concerns about the sustainability of reform compliance across government institutions.
The findings underscore the need for MDAs to move beyond periodic compliance exercises and embrace continuous improvements in service delivery.
Addressing heads of MDAs, Audu drew attention to ongoing mystery shopping exercises, the live performance tracker and the forthcoming end-of-year Business Facilitation Act (BFA) Compliance Ranking.
She explained that the mechanisms provide continuous visibility into institutional performance, expose service delivery gaps and hold agencies accountable for their reform commitments.
The monitoring framework is designed to ensure that MDAs maintain acceptable service standards and demonstrate measurable progress rather than rely solely on reported achievements or compliance on paper.
The engagement also highlighted the Federal Ministry of Finance’s growing emphasis on institutional performance, with the performance, responsiveness and reform compliance of government agencies expected to feature in its engagements and dealings with them.
The approach aligns with President Tinubu’s position that government institutions must demonstrate results and deliver improved services to citizens and businesses.
For PEBEC, the priority is to translate policy commitments into tangible and sustainable outcomes through continuous mystery shopping, real-time digital tracking, BFA compliance assessments and data-driven performance monitoring.
These measures are expected to strengthen transparency, identify implementation gaps and encourage MDAs to address weaknesses in their operations.
The findings also reinforce the importance of sustained institutional commitment, as improvements recorded during monitoring exercises must translate into lasting changes in public service delivery.
With continuous performance tracking and compliance assessments, PEBEC is seeking to ensure that federal agencies remain responsive, efficient and accountable for the services they provide.
The message from the engagement is clear: compliance on paper is no longer enough; MDAs must demonstrate measurable performance, sustained accountability and tangible results.
PEBEC reaffirmed its commitment to working with government institutions to build a more efficient, transparent and responsive public service while strengthening Nigeria’s business environment.
