Prophetess Glory Okon, a journalist who has covered the activities of politicians, has urged political aspirants to recognise the importance of political timing, credible advice and strategic decision-making ahead of elections.

Okon, in an opinion article, said that possessing leadership experience, financial resources and an impressive record of public service does not automatically translate into electoral success, stressing that understanding the political environment is equally important.

According to her, some politicians make the mistake of pursuing elective offices without adequately assessing the political circumstances, party structures, alliances, public sentiment and strength of their opponents.

She noted that while some aspirants may have demonstrated their capacity to deliver in public office, their decision to contest at a particular time could affect their political ambitions.

“Must a good politician contest for office at every opportunity, even when the political circumstances may not be favourable?” she asked.

Okon observed that politicians must learn to recognise when to contest, when to wait and when to support another candidate, adding that postponing an ambition could sometimes be a strategic decision rather than a sign of weakness.
Supporters’ Encouragement May Not Reflect Political Reality

The journalist also cautioned politicians against relying solely on the assurances of supporters who encourage them to contest elections without adequately considering the wider political environment.

She said that although such encouragement may be genuine, the preferences of a particular group do not necessarily reflect the position of the broader electorate.

Okon advised aspirants to consult widely, listen to credible advisers and objectively assess their chances and available options before committing themselves to an electoral contest.

She further warned against dismissing contrary opinions, noting that a refusal to listen to trusted advisers could prevent politicians from recognising important political realities.

According to her, some aspirants spend considerable financial resources pursuing political ambitions without first examining the challenges confronting their campaigns.

She added that changing political parties without addressing the underlying challenges may not necessarily produce the desired results.

However, Okon acknowledged that no adviser could guarantee an electoral outcome and that politicians sometimes had legitimate reasons to make independent decisions
