The Chairman of House Committee on Public Petitions, Hon Mike Etaba led other members of the Committee on a two-day assessment visit to Rivers State.
According to him, the
mission was to investigate the alleged pollution of the Mini Okoro River and its environment by multinational companies operating in the Trans Amadi Industrial Layout, Port Harcourt.
“The petition, brought before our committee by Bridge the Gap Initiative in Education and Health in Nigeria, highlighted the devastating impact of these companies’ activities on the river and the surrounding community. As a committee, we must ensure that the rights of Nigerians are protected and that the environment is preserved for future generations.
“During our visit, we inspected four companies: Halliburton Ltd, Coca-Cola, Schlumberger, and International Breweries. We observed that the Mini Okoro River, a vital water source for the community, has been severely polluted, posing significant health risks to the residents. While we acknowledged their economic contributions, we cannot ignore the environmental and health implications of their operations. And it is our responsibility to hold these companies accountable for their actions and ensure they take necessary measures to mitigate the harm caused.
He urged the companies to take immediate action to address the pollution and work towards sustainable practices that prioritize environmental stewardship and community well-being. He also assured the residents of their commitment in ensuring a safe environment for all.
They also used the visit to paid a courtesy visit to the state Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.
“We briefed him on our mission and stressed the need for collaboration to protect the lives of our people.
“We also took a moment to condole with him and the people of Rivers State over the recent tragic incident at Eleme Petrochemical Company, where an explosion occurred at Indorama, resulting in loss of lives and significant destruction of properties. We expressed our deepest sympathies and support during this difficult time.
Reacting, the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara welcomed them and commended the committee members for their dedication to the critical assignment. He also appreciated the efforts of Bridge the Gap Initiative in bringing the issue to his attention, pledging his support and collaboration to address the issue of pollution on the environment for a better future.
