The Senator representing Anambra South Senatorial District, Senator Emmanuel Nwachukwu has explained the reasons for his first motion he presented during plenary on the floor of the Senate on Wednesday 28th, 2026.

While answering questions from the Journalists after plenary, the Senator identified some of the erosion sites and poor state of major federal roads in the State that will need quick intervention by the federal government.

The lawmaker said Anambra South is one of the most erosion-ravaged areas in the country, warning that several communities and strategic transport routes are facing imminent danger.

Senator Nwachukwu also said Okija-Spur-Ihembosi-Ukpor-Ebenator-Ezinifite Road is another major flashpoint, explaining that erosion has already swallowed one side of the dual carriageway and is rapidly encroaching on the remaining lane.

“This is not just an Anambra road. It is a vital corridor linking Imo, Abia, Rivers and other states. If it is cut off, the consequences will be felt nationwide,” he cautioned.

The Senator also expressed concern over the condition of the Onitsha–Nnewi–Amichi–Ogbunike federal road, noting that the project has remained largely abandoned since 2003, with less than half of the work completed despite its significant economic value to the region.

He further revealed that the collapse of an old metal bridge constructed in the 1960s—while two replacement bridges are still under construction—has isolated several communities, disrupted commercial activities, increased transport costs, and restricted access to essential services such as healthcare and education.

“These are real-life challenges. They affect traders, students, patients and entire communities on a daily basis,” he said.

According to the lawmaker, although the motion had been listed on the Senate Order Paper since November 2025, delays in legislative scheduling prevented it from being considered earlier.

He expressed appreciation for the support of his colleagues and the directive of the Senate President mandating the Senate Committee on Works to urgently address the situation.

The Senator disclosed that the Committee on Works is expected to carry out an on-the-spot assessment of the affected roads within the next two weeks to push for immediate intervention by the Federal Ministry of Works.

On Onitsha Main Market Closure:

Senator Nwachukwu urged traders and residents to remain calm and exercise understanding, describing the development as emotional but one that calls for sincere reflection.

He recalled that May 30 has long been observed across Igboland as a day of remembrance for victims of the civil war, predating the current sit-at-home protests.

However, he stressed that the continued enforcement of sit-at-home orders over the past three years has severely weakened the South-East economy.

“Our region contributes less than eight percent to Nigeria’s GDP. Weekly shutdowns of economic activities are steadily shrinking our economy,” he noted.
He added that the practice has forced banks and corporate organisations to reduce operating days, discouraged investors, and slowed commercial growth in the region.

The Senator commended Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, for what he described as firm and proactive leadership in improving security and stabilising the state’s economy.

He praised the establishment of the Agụnechemba Security Network, the enactment of supporting legislation, and the provision of modern security equipment, which he said have helped reduce criminal activities and restore public confidence, particularly during the last festive season.
“Governor Soludo is a world-class economist who understands that economic growth cannot thrive under fear and uncertainty. His administration has delivered over 750 kilometres of roads and restored confidence in Anambra,” he stated.

The lawmaker affirmed his full support for the governor’s determination to end sit-at-home disruptions, describing the move as critical to safeguarding livelihoods and ensuring long-term prosperity.

He appealed to traders at the Onitsha Main Market and residents across the state to cooperate with market leaders, security agencies and the government in the collective interest of economic recovery.
According to him, a peaceful and secure business environment is essential for growth, prosperity and improved opportunities for the people of Anambra.

The Senator urged Ndi Anambra to remain law-abiding and united, stressing that sustainable development can only be achieved in an atmosphere of peace, security and cooperation.
