As political activities intensify ahead of elections, Prophetess Glory Okon who is also a Media Consultant has urged politicians across the country to focus on issue-based campaigns, demonstrate their achievements and present clear plans for improving the lives of citizens.

Okon, in an article on responsible political leadership, stressed that election campaigns should be centred on policies, development plans and service to the people rather than insults, personal attacks and abusive language against opponents.

She noted that voters deserve to know what candidates intend to offer in critical sectors such as employment, education, healthcare, security, infrastructure and economic development.

According to her, politicians seeking public office must clearly communicate their vision and explain how their proposed policies would address the challenges facing their constituents.

She also advised politicians who had previously held public office to present verifiable records of their achievements, while those seeking re-election should explain their accomplishments, unfinished projects and plans for improvement.

“An election is not merely an opportunity to attack another person. It is an opportunity to explain your vision, present your plans and earn the confidence of the electorate,” she stated.

Political Ambition Must Not Cost Human Lives

Okon also called on politicians, their supporters and campaign organisations to reject electoral violence and refrain from actions capable of endangering innocent lives.

She warned against acquiring weapons, inciting supporters or allowing political disagreements to degenerate into violence, emphasising that no political ambition should be pursued at the expense of human life.

According to her, every citizen, irrespective of political affiliation, deserves protection, dignity and peace.

She maintained that political opponents could disagree on policies and compete for public office without resorting to hatred, destruction or threats.

“The citizens you seek to represent deserve protection, dignity and peace. Your supporters, your opponents and people who have no interest in politics are equally entitled to safety,” she said.

She further reminded politicians that public office should be regarded as an opportunity to serve the people rather than an avenue for pursuing power at all costs.
Politicians Urged to Understand Political Timing

In her final advice, Okon urged aspiring candidates to understand the political environment, recognise the importance of timing, listen to credible counsel and seek God’s guidance before making critical decisions about their political ambitions.

She cautioned against allowing pride, personal interests or financial investments to prevent them from reconsidering their plans when presented with sound advice.

According to her, political success requires not only ambition but also wisdom, humility, patience and the willingness to make thoughtful decisions.

She encouraged politicians to conduct their campaigns with dignity, communicate their intentions clearly, respect their opponents and place the welfare of the people at the centre of their ambitions.

Okon concluded by wishing all politicians preparing to contest elections the wisdom to make responsible decisions and the courage to prioritise public welfare above personal ambition.

“Tell the people what you intend to do for them.

“Respect your opponents, reject violence and remember that leadership is a responsibility to serve,” she advised.

See you at the top!
